Moss Madden Memorial Medal

The Regional Science Association British and Irish Section awards, on an annual basis, the Moss Madden Memorial Medal to the member(s) of the Section who author the best article on regional science published in a particular calendar year. The jury is now beginning the search for the winner of the Moss Madden Medal for 2009.

We would be grateful if members of the section would send nominations for the 2009 Medal. Member should note that the Medal is awarded to the member or members of the Section that have written the article of greatest distinction published in a Regional Science journal during 2009. Nominators should provide a reference to the article.  Also, self nominations are allowed. Any paper which is authored or co-authored by a member of the jury (Peter Batey, Geoff Hewings and John Dewhurst) is ineligible.

The Moss Madden Memorial Medal – Regulations

At the Annual Dinner in Bath, September 2000 it was announced that the Section is to award, on an annual basis, the Moss Madden Memorial Medal to the members of the Section who author the best article published in a regional science journal in a calendar year. The committee have agreed that the Medal will be awarded under the following conditions:

1. The Regional Science Association International: British & Irish Section may award annually, on a calendar year basis, the Moss Madden Memorial Medal.

2. If awarded for any year, the Medal shall be presented to the recipient or recipients at the annual conference in the following year.

3. The Medal shall be awarded to the member or members of the Section that have written the article of greatest distinction published in a Regional Science journal during a calendar year.

4. In order to be awarded the Medal all the authors of the relevant article must have been members of the British & Irish Section in the relevant year.

5. The Medal shall be awarded by a jury of three.

6. The jury will initially consist of Professor John Dewhurst (representing the British & Irish Section, Professor Peter Batey (representing the Department of Civic Design, University of Liverpool) and Professor Geoffrey Hewings (representing RSAI). Vacancies on the committee will be filled by appointment by the committee of the British & Irish Section.

7. The jury shall have the sole authority to determine whether any publication should be regarded as a Regional Science journal.

8. Members of the jury shall not be eligible to receive the award of the Medal.

9. The jury may elect not to award the Medal in any year that either there is no qualifying article or they determine there is no article of sufficient merit.

10. It is the responsibility of the jury to monitor publications in major regional science journals. However any member of the Section may propose an article for consideration by the jury.

11. Decisions made by the jury are final.
